[About Benifuuki] Benifuuki was developed at the Vegetable and Tea Research Institute in Makurazaki, Kagoshima Prefecture, as a variety for black tea and semi-fermented tea, and was registered as a variety in 1995. Fresh Benifuuki tea leaves are picked from spring through autumn and immediately processed into tea to preserve their freshness. The tea leaves grown throughout Kagoshima Prefecture are carefully selected, vacuum sealed, and stored in a freezer to maintain freshness throughout the year. Only the small amount needed is then blended and roasted to maximize the flavor of the Benifuuki, and the finished tea leaves are then powdered whole.
[About organic farming] Tea leaves are grown in fields all over Kagoshima Prefecture, but organically grown tea is cultivated by controlling the use of chemicals in the fields and the drift of pests from neighboring farms. While tea leaves and various other agricultural products are cultivated according to safety and security standards, organic Benifuuki tea is an even healthier tea.
Komai-en's Organic Benifuuki is high-quality Benifuuki grown in the finest tea fields in Kagoshima. Not only is it high in methylated catechins, but it is also delicious with little astringency. Komai-en is extremely grateful and thankful to be able to handle such high-quality tea leaves from this region. We will continue to provide delicious Benifuuki tea to everyone as a specialty store, not just now, but for many years to come.
Komai-en's Beni-fuuki tea is made with the first harvest of tea leaves. Beni-fuuki tea is harvested from the first harvest in April to the fourth harvest in autumn. The first harvest of tea leaves contains the most umami components, which gradually decrease from the second harvest onwards. However, teas harvested from summer to autumn contain more methylated catechins. Komai-en carefully examines the blend to create the finished product.
