Born in 1972, young composer and pianist Carter Pan (1972-) has already received high acclaim internationally for his numerous works. This collection of piano pieces, ``12 Sides'', was created in collaboration with his friend, the Canadian pianist Joel Hastings, and is interesting in that each song has a title and the name of a famous pianist who influenced him. Every song has a different expression, some are calm, others have notes floating through the air like dust. Jazz-inspired tunes, explosions of fearless virtuosity, and eeriness. It's elusive and mysterious music, but it also has a strong presence that leaves a strange impression on your ears. The playful ``Bills,'' a work born out of an accident in which he accidentally cut his finger with a cheese grater, and ``Your Touch,'' written as a cadenza to the Piano Concerto (8.559043), are ennui jazz pieces. Well, he's a very interesting composer.
