We are releasing a limited edition replica of the "Hayakawa Retractable Pencil," Japan's earliest practical mechanical pencil. In 1915 (Taisho 4), Japan's first practical mechanical pencil was invented by Hayakawa Tokuji (the current founder of Sharp Corporation). Hayakawa Tokuji learned metalworking techniques as an apprentice when he was young, and after he grew into a metal ornament craftsman, he produced only 15 mechanical pencils at the time, featuring metal ornaments and attention to the details of the exterior. [It is currently kept at the Sharp Museum (Tenri City, Nara Prefecture).
