Product Introduction
[Contents] A typical reciprocating engine generates power by moving a cylindrical piston up and down inside a cylinder. A rotary engine (RE) generates power by the rotational motion of a completely different rice ball-shaped piston (rotor). Mazda, a Japanese car manufacturer, was the first in the world to successfully put RE to practical use and at one point made it its identity.
The RX-7 was released in 1978 as a RE-only car under the name Savanna RX-7. The second generation was released in 1985, the third generation in 1991, and the series came to an end in 2003.
Hot Wheels chose the third generation RX-7 as its motif, which features an organic form that makes extensive use of curved surfaces, and is commonly known by the nickname FD (F-D) due to its model number (FD3S).
