[Contents] Mitsubishi Pajero was introduced in 1982 as a pioneer of what is now called an SUV, a small pickup truck with a station wagon-type body mounted on the chassis of the Forte 4WD. At that time, the word SUV was not widely used and it was often referred to as RV (an abbreviation for recreational vehicle), and the Pajero became extremely popular as a driving force behind the boom. In 1983, Mitsubishi began participating in the Paris-Dakar Rally, which was said to be the world's toughest rally at the time, in order to promote the Pajero. Starting with a debut win in its first year, it has won numerous victories since changing its base to the second-generation Pajero in 1991. Since 1997, rally cars run by automakers have been required to be based on commercially available cars (prior to that, prototypes that were largely different from commercially available cars were the norm), so the company has developed suspension systems that are advantageous for off-road driving to meet this requirement. Mitsubishi produced approximately 2,700 units of the Pajero Evolution, a rally base vehicle equipped with engines, aerodynamic devices, etc. Hot Wheels has recreated the Pajero Evolution's distinctive features, including the over fenders, front and rear aero bumpers, and engine hood with large air intake ports.
